Clinical studies are research studies that test potential treatments or medical devices, as well as investigate new ways to use existing treatments. They are an important part of the development of new therapies for multiple myeloma.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b23986f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b23986f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt&#8217;s important to understand why diversity matters in multiple myeloma clinical trials. Multiple myeloma adversely affects different populations. Gender, age, and geographic location all have an impact<sup>1<\/sup>. African Americans are twice as likely to develop multiple myeloma compared to other ethnicities. They tend to be diagnosed at a younger age and have poorer outcomes<sup>2<\/sup>. As much as 20% of multiple myeloma cases in the US affect African Americans, despite making up only 13% of the population. Despite this fact, African American participants have been found to make up a median percentage of only 4.5% of multiple myeloma clinical studies<sup>3<\/sup>.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a3de10b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a3de10b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22a0073 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"22a0073\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eae4b67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eae4b67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMultiple myeloma is also mainly a disease of the elderly with people being diagnosed at an average age of 66-70.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ee2996 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7ee2996\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGiven these disparities, it\u2019s important to ensure that clinical studies are representative of the population affected by multiple myeloma.
